In Knysna, you’re in Seafood Heaven

There’s a tempting choice of restaurants, coffee shops, pizzerias and farm stalls in and around Knysna – try Del Gusto, Fire Fly, Ile de Pain for breakfasts and lunches, La Loerie, Pembreys... there’s something for every taste. Oysters from the lagoon are a local speciality.



Weekends are famous for the many markets in the area – don’t miss Friday evenings at the Montessori School for delicious al fresco fare and ambience. Or on Saturday mornings, wander round the Wild Oats Farmers’ market in Sedgefield for local farm produce, cottage industries, fine art and crafts.




Sun and sea
Take a sunset walk along Brenton beach or a swim in the sea. The sea temperatures vary from 14 to 23 degrees Centigrade (57 - 73 degrees Farenheit) depending on the season.

Hire a boat and cruise our beautiful lagoon, estuary and river.

Take a ferry across to Featherbed Nature Reserve or to the Knysna Heads - enjoy a romantic sunset or a leisurely lunchtime cruise.

Watch the dolphins and whales play at Brenton-on-Sea, Knoetzie or from the Heads during the months of July to October.

Abseil down the sheer Knysna Heads or dive on the wreck of the Paquita with Storms River Adventures.

Rock climb in some uniquely beautiful areas.

Swing from the trees! Experience the thrill of hanging from a cable and gliding from one tree top to another in the dense canopy of the famous Tsitsikamma Forest.

Adrenaline enthusiasts could try Blackwater Tubing at Stormsriver or bungee jumping at Bloukrans River Bridge.

Wild Life
Watch the crocodiles being fed at a Game farm just a few minutes outside of George.

See a bird ranch - at one of the world-famous ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn.

Visit the Cheetah farm, the Primate Sanctuary and the Knysna Forest Elephants. The most endangered Seahorse in the world lives in the Knysna Lagoon.

The Pledge Nature Reserve near the town centre is a botanical treasure.

Day Trips
Knysna is surrounded by lush indigenous forests and beautiful coastlines. A leisurely exploration in any direction will be rewarding. The Knysna Tourism office in town is a mine of information.

Time-travel in a real working steam train: take the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe from Knysna to George and pass through some of the most scenic coastal areas in South Africa.

While in George, visit the fascinating Railway Museum.

Take a trip through to Oudtshoorn and view the amazing limestone formations in the Cango Caves.

Visit the Post Office Tree and the Dias Caravel Museum in Mossel Bay.

Outdoor Activities
This area is a golfer's paradise. Visit one of the various PGA registered golf-courses along our beautiful coastline Pezula, Knysna, Fancourt Goose Valley

Cycle on the many biking trails through the local forests

Hike or horse-back ride one of the excellent hiking and horse riding trails along the coast and in the forest – Forest Horse Rides or Harkerville Horse Rides.

On the estuary and lagoon there is a choice of canoeing, sailing, diving, fishing, and waterskiing.

Out and About
Shopping is a pleasure as you discover the many unique boutiques, galleries and speciality shops in Knynsa - The Waterfront, Woodmill Lane and Main Street are just some shopping venues.
